Lee Shore part 2
My favorite idea is the Sunslammer song — the real song worked into a troll story about a Helmsman who flew into a sun rather than be enslaved. The hint of social blending between troll and human cultures is intriguing — is it part of the universe merge the game made, or is it happening naturally now that we know each other? Do troll highbloods regard us all as beneath contempt, or do they pick up on our social divisions? How have we stopped them from conquering us?
because i am sleep-deprived like whoa, and also that story is kind of an unplanned clusterfuck, i will answer only the last question.
trolls very nearly did conquer earth, but a few disgruntled defectors got some troll tech into human hands, and by troll standards human science moves really fucking fast. also, humans have absolutely no sense of the dignity of warfare, and do terroristic shit like using volunteer ex-helmsmen in mining ships to throw asteroids at troll residential planets. and issuing their threats afterwards. instead of converting their entire population into a workforce to build a fleet of slightly inferior battleships with which to face the condesce’s veteran fleet head to head in open space, like a civilized race.
humans are barbarians. very, very flexible barbarians who reverse-engineer anything that’s not nailed down. why is that so sexy.
